Whether you’re new to the area or have lived in Glendale, MO, for a while, it can be hard to know what to do. We all tend to go to the same restaurants and visit the same parks. If you’re looking for something new or getting to know the area better, here are some of the best places to visit and delicious food to try.
The Frank Lloyd Wright House in Ebsworth Park
Known as America’s greatest architect, Frank Lloyd Wright designed unique and stunning homes across the United States. You can visit one in Ebsworth Park! It was originally home to the Krauses, who contacted Frank Lloyd Wright to see if he’d design their home. He gladly did, and even the furniture within the house was designed by this famous architect. This home is stunning with only 60 and 120 degree angles, and the design decisions make it a “must-see” while living in Glendale, MO.
The Magic House: St. Louis Children’s Museum
For those with children in their life, you’re not going to want to miss out on all the fun going on at The Magic House. There’s Sandcastle Beach, Molly of Denali, Kenya’s Kids, and other fantastic learning adventures that kids of all ages can enjoy. With multiple family pass options, you’ll get access to everything! Also, don’t forget to sign up for email updates to get notified about new activities and exhibits when they open. Maybe even consider renting the museum for parties or weddings!
Chain of Rocks Bridge
This bridge’s unique name comes from the 17-mile-long shoal named Chain of Rocks. This shoal begins just north of St. Louis, and the rock ledge under the service makes it a dangerous stretch of the Mississippi River. This was a famous stop on the infamous Route 66 drive because of the 30-degree turn the bridge makes halfway across the Mississippi River. It’s hard to pass up an engineering trick like this when it’s so close by!
Laumeier Sculpture Park
Looking for something to do this weekend but don’t want to spend a gorgeous day inside? Check out the Laumeier Sculpture Park on Rott Road. It’s open every day from 8 am until 30 minutes past sunset, and it’s free! You can go here to enjoy some of the most amazing sculptures and fun events happening all the time, including Beer Outside Nights. Enjoy the great outdoors and discover new locally brewed craft beer and food trucks.
Ulysses S Grant: National Historic Site
Built from 1812 to 1816, which makes it one of the oldest homes in St. Louis. The estate was originally home to the Dents, who were to be Grant’s eventual in-laws. In 1851 Grant and his wife moved to live in White Haven permanently with his in-laws after four years in the Army. As the 18th President of the United States, Grant never wanted the life of being “famous.” Instead, after the Civil War, Grant wanted to upgrade his home, be a farmer, and raise horses. You can now visit the home and take a tour of the preserved house. Even the house’s exterior color is the same color the Grants chose as they made upgrades.
Man on a Horse Sculpture
The bronze “Man on a Horse” sculpture by Fernand Botero is at the corner of Clayton Wydown Blvd and South Hanley Road. There are a lot of theories about the meaning behind the statue and what exactly Botero was trying to say with the portly figure on the horse. Some say it’s an attempt to beautify fatness in a culture where fatness has been shamed. However, the artist has not confirmed or denied these theories. Either way, that’s the real joy in art. Looking and finding your own meaning through the piece. Visit “Man on a Horse” yourself, and maybe you can find a different meaning than everyone else!
