Whether we want to admit that summer is heading towards its logical conclusion, fall is just around the corner. Likely, you’ve already been seeing autumn décor popping up in your favorite home store, so we thought we’d talk about fall kitchen décor trends.
Think functional
The pumpkins, the apples – these are what we all think about when the leaves start to fall. But, in the kitchen, if some of the things can be functional, you’ve got a winner.
For example, you could pull out your trays or serving platters—things that you typically use around thanksgiving—these can be the centerpiece on your island, dining table, or on an open shelf.
Harvest vegetables can be functional, too. For instance, you can place a bunch of carrots and kale in a bowl (decorative kale is really lovely), and that can become part of your display. It looks very rustic and fall-like.
Wooden cutting boards and copper accessories provide a neutral background to highlight those deeper fall colors, orange, crimson, and yellow.
Fall wreaths and seasonal ornaments
Adding a wreath is a festive way to spice up your windows or your cabinets. They can be made out of little pumpkins, gourds, or colorful leaves, but they don’t have to be. If the wreath has those warmer, earthy colors, it will still have the spirit of autumn without having to buy into the scarecrows and jack-o-lanterns motif.
If your items don’t have any specific fall features, you can easily repurpose them at other times of the year. For instance, if you have nice canisters and serving dishes that you use every day, you can dress them up with seasonal ornaments that can be changed out with the seasons. That way, you don’t have to invest so much into your kitchen décor every time the weather changes.
Ditch the kitsch – don’t go too heavy on the fall theme
You don’t want to go too heavy on the fall theme because it may end up looking like you walked into a theme store or an amusement park. This is a trap that a lot of people fall into. There are so many cute things out there to choose from, it’s easy to go overboard.
Preferably, you want to think more along the lines of “framing.” Orange colors, pumpkins, a red tea light, a turkey, fake leaves, and flowers – if you were to choose one or two of these things and use them to accent your canisters or a neutral element at the back of the counter it will feel more natural and less of an autumnal onslaught.
Fall décor is easy to find
In the fall, mums are a must. Hardy mums can be placed at the kitchen door or on the table. They come in all colors from bright yellow to purple, and they smell lovely too.
At your local grocery store, you can pick up little things, mini-pumpkins, gourds, squash, things like that. You can put these in a glass bowl, a wooden bowl, or apothecary jars.
Apothecary jars are great to fill with a lot of different things – Indian corn, dried peas, things like that. You can pick up all kinds of great items at Hobby Lobby or even at your local dollar store.
Copper accents
Copper and warm metals like bronze are very fall-like and also décor-friendly. Something as simple as a copper kettle on the stove, copper charger plates, copper canisters, or a copper serving platter works very nicely. If you wanted to go all-in, you might think about a copper backsplash panel or copper-toned baseboards.
A warm fall color palette
There are many ways that you can highlight the fall season with a fall color palette. Elements of orange, yellow, and gold add instant warmth and coziness. Swap out your island stools for chairs with gold or orange seat cushions or go for a more rustic appeal with natural wood accents.
If your kitchen is white or neutral, think about dried flowers, apple boxes lined with burlap and filled with green autumn squash, or woven wreaths made out of wheat and threaded with strawflowers.
Have you ever seen a swan gourd? Look for them at specialty stores and farm stands. They come in various sizes, but they all have a long, curving neck, just like a swan. So pretty!
Apples are everywhere in the fall too, and the red skins make a nice statement, either in a whitewashed wooden apple box or mixed in with your sugar pumpkins.
