Well, that doesn’t necessarily have to be the case. The look of your stairs can make a big impact, especially when they’re visible from the front entryway of the home. They’re often the first things people see when they visit, so you might as well use them to your advantage.
Painted Stairs are a Design Statement
We love the look of painted stairs. It’s such a simple thing to do, and yet the effect can be enormous. Whether you prefer subtle or statement, painted stairs add value and visual appeal to your home.
Clean and Classic
Painting your stairs doesn’t have to be bold and outrageous. If you’re already working with a good set of stairs, all you need is a little color to get them looking good as new. For a traditional look, we love bright white on the risers, and a warm mid-tone wood stain on the treads.
Classic, with a Twist
If you like the classic look but want to jazz it up a bit, why not paint the risers black instead of white? It will still look good with a walnut or hazelnut-toned wood, while being a little more adventurous than timeless white.
The Monochrome
If you want to make a statement, all-over monochrome paint will certainly pack a punch. If you’re covering the risers, treads, and even the handrail, you may want to opt for a more neutral hue. Black is chic and stylish, and so is white, although it shows dirt a little easier, especially on treads. The Rug Look-Alike
Like the look of a rug on your stairs but can’t be bothered with the upkeep? Why not just paint one on? Choose a neutral color for the base—white or grey are good picks—and then paint the “runner” in a wide strip down the center. You can finish it off with decorative rug-like accents, like stripes along the edge, swirls, or even faux rug tassels!
The Ombre
If you’re artistically inclined, painted ombre stairs are really cool. Ombre is the blending of one hue into another, and it’s a technique that works for any palette. Select your color, and start with the darkest tone on your staircase’s bottom step. Lighten the color slightly with each step, and by the time you reach the top, you’ll have a whole range of tones in your color of choice!
Rainbow Road
The painted rainbow staircase is the flamboyant cousin of ombre stairs. Try this style on for size and show off your colorful personality! Paint each riser a different color of the rainbow. To truly mimic the look of a rainbow, start with purple at the 
bottom and work your way up to red. Rinse and repeat if you like! Or, if you have an extra-long staircase, transition the tones as you would with the ombre style for a smooth ride over the rainbow.
Perfectly Patterned
If a pattern is more your style, there are hundreds of to choose from. When you’re painting, the world is your oyster. You can use painter’s tape to create shapes like chevron, herringbone, and asymmetrical geometric patterns. With a little forethought and tape, anything is possible. But don’t feel discouraged if you’re not particularly artistic. You can still get an amazing visual with the help of stencils.
