Most St. Louis neighborhoods are microcosms unto themselves, and the best are at once distinctive, walkable, charming, and packed with unique destinations to explore.
City or Suburbs?
City neighborhoods in St. Louis feature everything from brick ranch-style homes to “McMansions”, while in the suburbs you will find the older, more stately homes with big, wraparound front porches that reflect a typical southern style.
Many younger professionals prefer to live downtown in the city center. For families with children, it makes more sense to be slightly out of the downtown core in more suburban neighborhoods, areas that typically have better school districts.
Most of these neighborhoods are a 15 to 20-minute drive to downtown St. Louis.
Webster Groves, Glendale, Kirkwood
These neighborhoods are highly sought after for their home values and their excellent schools. If you were planning to raise a family and wanted to be outside of the noise and hustle of the city, these are great choices.
Here, you’ll find grand homes, quiet streets, and quaint, walkable commercial areas with wine bars, great restaurants, and a thriving cultural community and entertainment district, as this is where you’ll find the Opera Theatre of Saint Louis and the Repertory Theatre of St. Louis.
Creve Coeur
Areas further west like Creve Coeur are nice as well – and perfect if you aren’t too concerned with being in the city center, as it’s about a 30-minute drive on average. Creve Coeur has a younger demographic (the median age is 45), and the neighborhoods here are walkable and friendly.
Chesterfield
Longer than 30 minutes from downtown St. Louis (as you need to drive through Creve Couer), Chesterfield is spread out over a wider area, and you might say it’s more of a “classic” suburbia. It’s picturesque, and it’s got some great family-friendly attractions, such as the Sachs Butterfly House, Katy Trail State Park, and Faust Park with its historic buildings and a real 1920s carousel. From rolling hills and lush valleys to world-class shopping destinations, Chesterfield has it all.
Recent years have seen a surge of development along the highway 40 corridor towards Chesterfield. Many major corporations have opted to move out of the city to set up along this stretch to take advantage of attractive real estate options. As a result, there are plenty of jobs in this area, so living here would give you the best of both worlds – the peace and quiet of the suburbs with easy access to everything St. Louis has to offer.
Wildwood
Wildwood is a bedroom community located in the far western part of St. Louis County, south of Chesterfield and about a 20 to 30-minute drive into downtown St. Louis. Wildwood’s neighborhoods are safe and family-oriented, and it is known for its great schools, parks, trails, and outdoor attractions.De
Within The City: Central West End
The trendy area of St. Louis’ Central West End borders the eastern edge of Forest Park. Here is where you’ll find the Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis, which features the world’s largest collection of mosaic art. Events and festivals abound here, and it seems like every month there are festivities of some sort going on. It’s got a slightly European feel to it and plenty to see and do.
DeBaliviere Place
DeBaliviere Place is articulated by Victorian architecture, with apartment buildings of all shapes and sizes lining its streets. It’s close to the inner city, and a nice old neighborhood with plenty of charm.
Compton Heights
Compton Heights is another historic neighborhood that is close to everywhere you want to be. Its winding streets and stunning architecture are as extraordinary as it gets in St. Louis.
Tower Grove
Tower Grove has undergone a great deal of change and renewal in recent years and although some pockets are nicer than others, it’s definitely an area worth looking at if you’re trying to find a place to settle down.
