Before and After Kitchen Remodel: A Historic Creve Coeur MO Home

before and after home remodel st. louisA great way to envision your own kitchen remodeling project is to read about how other homeowners accomplished theirs. We recently remodeled a kitchen in Creve Coeur where the clients wanted to transform the space to incorporate modern conveniences while still respecting the home’s history.

Built by hand by the husband’s grandfather, this was much more than a “house” to the young couple who had inherited it. We took the small, cramped kitchen and dining room and designed a more open space for their growing family.

Before and After Kitchen Remodel: From Crowded Rooms to Spacious Living

The owners of this historic home wanted to make over the confined look and feel of the separate kitchen and dining room; the original kitchen had five doorways! The goal was to create an open concept space that blended well with the aesthetics of the rest of the house.

The biggest decision the owners made was to flip the rooms: the old dining room became the kitchen and vice versa. We removed two walls which allowed us to create a much more workable floor-plan that not only made for a smoother traffic pattern, but also gave us more space for the cabinetry and appliances the clients had chosen.

Design Built on Budget

This young family had a toddler and another baby on the way, so we needed to be mindful of their budget. Inventive ways we updated existing features included:

  • Giving the fireplace a modernized look by painting the brick and replacing the existing doors with flat black ones.

  • Removing the carpets and refinishing the hardwood floors in a more contemporary color.
  • Adding stained trimmed to “frame” the fireplace.
  • Installing new tile in the coat closet and foyer that matched the fireplace hearth.
  • Laying vinyl plank floors in the newly renovated rooms.
  • Staining the wood trim and fireplace mantle to match the new floors.

The clients also decided to update the flooring throughout, bringing a cohesiveness to the house that had previously been missing.

An Entertainer’s Delight

The young homeowners love to entertain and the new open floorplan was a great way to give them the space they needed for friends and family to gather. They chose stained maple cabinets, Cambria countertops, a gray painted island, and a modern glass subway tile backsplash with trapezoid accents.

Oversized gold Ombre pendants over the island add a nice modern touch and inspired the gold cabinet hardware. Other modern touches include LED strip lighting installed under the island overhang and two USB ports along with the standard plugs.

Final Details

The clients wanted a clearer pathway to the basement steps, which were in the adjoining garage. We built a wall in the very deep space and created a hallway to the basements stairs. By using the same vinyl plank flooring in this new area, it gave a uniform look to the added space. Finally, we installed a new door on the all-glass sunroom which, during the winter, became what the clients called an “energy vampire.”

The final results are beautiful and better reflect today’s newer style. You can see more images of this kitchen remodel here.
