As the County Seat of Monroe County, Waterloo offers a blend of deep historical roots, strong schools, and abundant local amenities. It’s a warm, welcoming community where residents take pride in their hometown. With a population of around 10,000, it remains the largest community in the county.
Waterloo’s story stretches back to the 1780s, when American settlers founded the early community of Bellefontaine, which grew to nearly 300 residents by 1800. In 1816, Emery Peters Rogers of Massachusetts opened the area’s first permanent store, mill, and quarry. The northern section surrounding his businesses eventually became known as Peterstown, and over time, the town split into two competing groups—each shaping the community’s early identity.
Local lore offers a lively explanation for how Waterloo got its name. In 1818, an Irishman named Charles Carroll arrived and made it his mission to settle the feud between the northern and southern halves of the community. He built his home on one side of the dividing creek and his barn on the other, declaring, “It won’t be Bellefontaine, and it won’t be Peterstown—begorra, I’ll give ye both your Waterloo.”
By the 1840s, a wave of German immigrants had begun shaping the town’s character, and many buildings and family names still reflect that heritage today. In 1978, Waterloo’s historic district earned a place on the National Register of Historic Places, including significant landmarks such as the Bellefontaine House and the Peterstown House. Visitors can learn more about the area’s past at the History Museum of Monroe County, located right in town.
For nearly two decades, Waterloo has maintained a Sister City relationship with Porta Westfalica in West Germany, earning six Readers Digest awards for its exceptional program. The annual Porta Westfalica Fest celebrates this international friendship.
