Brentwood, MO Facts
Brentwood, Missouri, offers a warm, suburban retreat just moments from the lively heart of St. Louis.
The community traces its roots back to 1804, when several prominent families settled the area. What is now Brentwood began with three major land purchases made by the Bompart, Gay, and Marshall families. By the 1870s, the small settlement was thriving, largely thanks to entrepreneur Thomas J. Madden. His rock quarry, tavern, barbershop, grocery store, and blacksmith shop fueled significant growth, and the town soon became known as Maddenville in recognition of his influence.
Through the 1800s, the community continued to grow, thanks largely to its position along the Manchester Trail, a major route for mail carriers and covered wagon travel. Its location just outside St. Louis, combined with convenient streetcar access, made Brentwood an appealing place to live and work.
By 1919, the possibility of being annexed by the neighboring town of Mapleville pushed the citizens of Maddenville to take action. On December 5 of that year, they chose to incorporate as the village of Brentwood, ensuring control over their own future.
In the decade that followed, the village gained a troublesome reputation due to the number of casinos drawing gamblers from near and far. James A. Willingham, Brentwood’s first mayor, campaigned on restoring order and protecting families. He succeeded, and in 1929 he signed the ordinance that officially set Brentwood’s boundaries and recognized it as an independent city.
Today, Brentwood is home to roughly 8,000 residents who enjoy excellent schools, welcoming neighborhoods, and a variety of recreational amenities.
